New! Tapas Demonstration class!

Chef Mary Ann Kiernan, November 10, 7:00-9:00 pm, 132 Lyman Hall, $20 plus $5 annual membership

You may know her best as the executive chef of the hors d'oeuvre for the famous Great Chefs Dinner held each year in Skaneateles. Join us for a very special evening as Chef Mary Ann Kiernan demonstrates how to make tapas. These little bites are highly flavored bursts from the Mediterranean. Chef Kiernan will discuss the tradition of tapas, provide recipes, and serve tastings as she demonstrates how you can provide relaxing hospitality with tapas.

Chef Kiernan has been a caterer since 1985 and an SU faculty member in Hospitality Management since 2007. She was trained at Florida International University, the Culinary Institute of America, and the American Culinary Federation.

Parking is free and available in Booth Garage. Course fee is $20, plus $5 LLI annual membership fee. Space is limited. Register early by mail or phone. Registration fees are non-refundable. Doors open at 6:45. Downloadable registration form and flyer. To register by phone, or if you need more information, contact Roseann DiMarzo at rdimarzo@maxwell.syr.edu or 315-443-3114, fax 315-443-1081.

About the Lifelong Learning Institute

The Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI), founded in 2008 at Syracuse University, offers non-credit classes that are specially designed for adults age 50 and older. Research shows that older adults who participate in meaningful activities enjoy better mental, physical, social, and economic health and an ongoing desire for learning.

These classes, taught by SU faculty, are short (16 contact hours or less) and intensive, but informal—there are no grades. Almost all have free, convenient parking and accessible facilities.

Students in LLI classes do much more than just study. These classes combine learning with hands-on community engagement. For example, in 2008 and 2009:

  • Students in The Stars and Planets learned how to use a telescope to explore the night sky. Then they shared their telescope and their newfound skills with residents at The Nottingham retirement community.
  • Students in Making Documentaries studied the art of documentary films, created their own one-minute documentaries, then invited their family and friends to a screening party at Newhouse III on the SU campus.
  • Another popular class, Seeing the Light: Theory and Practice of Photography, helped students improve their photographs, become familiar with their digital cameras, and develop an appreciation of the history of photography, while documenting aspects of the current Syracuse community for posterity.

And for a change of pace:

  • Students in Making Appetizers spent one delightful evening observing a professional chef demonstrate how to make delicious, yet simple, hors d'oeuvres. They asked lots of questions and enjoyed the tasty samples.

Tuition: The annual membership is $5. In addition, we charge a modest tuition based on the number of contact hours: $20 for classes with 2 contact hours, $30 for 4-hour classes, $55 for 8 hour classes, and $110 for classes with 16 contact hours.
